Die RhB erneuert und modernisiert ihr Schienennetz laufend. Um diese Arbeiten gebündelt ausführen zu können, werden einzelne Streckenabschnitte komplett gesperrt. Die Beförderung der Passagiere erfolgt während dieser Sperren mittels Ersatzkursen. Der Auftragnehmer richtet die Bahnersatzkurse gemäss Fahrplan ein und fährt diese. Der Auftrag endet mit der Vollendung der Baustellen, welche den Ersatzverkehr notwendig machen.
